Sun protection should become a routine part of your child’s day, just like brushing their teeth or wearing a seatbelt. The best strategy is a combination of sunscreen, protective clothing, shade, and smart timing.
Start with clothing. Long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and wide-brimmed hats can shield large areas of skin from the sun. Look for lightweight, breathable fabrics with a UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) rating of 30 or higher. Sunglasses with 100% UVA and UVB protection are also essential, as children’s eyes are more vulnerable to UV damage.
Sunscreen is a must anytime children are outdoors, especially when clothing doesn’t cover all areas. Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher and one that’s water-resistant if your child will be swimming or sweating. For young children and babies over 6 months, mineral-based sunscreens containing zinc oxide or titanium dioxide are often recommended because they are less likely to irritate sensitive skin.
Apply sunscreen generously 15 to 30 minutes before going outside. Be sure to cover often-missed areas like the ears, neck, tops of the feet, and backs of the hands. Reapply every two hours or more frequently if your child has been in the water or wiped it off. For babies under 6 months, the best protection is keeping them in the shade and using sun-protective clothing rather than sunscreen.
Time of day matters too. UV rays are strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., so try to plan outdoor activities for the early morning or late afternoon whenever possible. Use umbrellas, trees, tents, or canopies to create shade when you’re outside during peak sun hours.
Modeling good sun safety habits is another powerful tool. When kids see adults consistently applying sunscreen, wearing hats, and staying in the shade, they’re more likely to adopt these behaviors themselves. Encourage kids to take ownership of their sun protection by letting them help apply their sunscreen or pick out their favorite sun hat.
Finally, remember that sun damage is cumulative. Even on cloudy days, up to 80% of UV rays can reach the skin. Teaching sun safety early helps kids build healthy habits that will protect their skin for years to come.
Keeping your little ones safe in the sun doesn’t have to be complicated—it just takes a little preparation and consistency. With the right protection, your kids can enjoy the outdoors safely while you enjoy peace of mind.
